Time changes and with it taste of people. This is the mantra that has guided BK Shrestha Tailoring to success from its time of inception 32 years ago.

Babu Kaji shrestha, the founder of the business and after whom the business is named, says he had to strongly revolt against his father to begin the business. He was a Shrestha and his father did not want him to get into tailoring business.



But Shrestha says he needed more money to better nurse his pregnant wife and the salary his government job provided was not enough. Moreover, he adds that he could also not ask his father due the latter's weak economic status. Thus he left his home and came to stay in Baghbazar to restart what his father had sought to end. And for the seed capital, he took a loan from the bank keeping his wife's jewellery as deposit.

Thought good management of time and money, the couple did manage to gradually take the business to higher pedestals. Now, the business initially run only by the husband and wife with one sewing machine employs over 200 staff, directly and indirectly. This itself speaks volumes of their success.
BK Shrestha tailoring is mainly famous for suits, available both in readymade and through custom tailoring. Nevertheless, it also offers casuals and other wears for ladies and kids. "We cater to the clothing of newborns to old ones," claims Shrestha.

The company has all its branches located in Kathmandu, Apart from its main showroom in Baghbazar, it has branches in Chabahil, Tripureshwor and chuchepati.

The business house moves ahead with a vision to provide customers wears as per the present fashion demands. "People today have less time and want readymade clothing's, so we provide them that according to latest fashion," Shrestha says, adding, "Apart catering to the customers' present taste, we also provide to them good quality cloths quickly.

"We always see what should be our next step, what is new in the market, what our drawback is and how to score over our competitors. These factors have also played a major role in ensuring a good stand for us in the market," Shrestha says.

The brand, which is also ISO 9001:2000 certified, has chosen blue with the name in white and yellow as its colors.

Another quality that BK Shrestha Tailoring boasts of is that is employs quality cutters. It also tries to maintain its quality cutters. It also tries to maintain its quality throughout. We work according to a formula, which makes our product meet a certain standards."

The company's Clientele are mainly 'middle-class' people, although 'high-class' people also frequent the palace. Thought they have many old clients, they also have increasing number of new faithful customers.

So, how has the product been marketed? Apart from word of mouth,, the publicity of BK Shrestha Tailoring has mostly come from advertisements in the electronic media What have also helped attract many customers to it are its various schemes and seasonal sales.
"Last year, we offered Bangkok tickets to lucky customers, We also have summer and winter sales, which pulls many customers. We also give discounts to customers buying through credit and debit cards, " Shrestha says.

The company has also faced challenges from competitors mainly on pricing. However, Shrestha claims their continuous adherence to good quality has acted in their favor to maintain their stand in the market.

Being in the clothing industry, one cannot for sure remain inactive during fashion-related programmes. So BK Shrestha Tailoring has sponsored a number of fashion shows, beauty pageants and programmes in FM Stations.

The immediate plan of the business house is to go behind the valley through franchises.
